With the rejection of the Toll charges, the arrival of the G8 cycle caravan and the summer weather Edinburgh needs a Critical Mass!
If anyone is interested in organising something for the summer then drop me a line or contacts of people who might be interested...lets get the ball (wheels) rolling.....

Dave,

I'n not the person to organise this, but I would be interested in taking part. I'll look out for further posts from you on the subject.

Mike

With the Make Poverty History cyclists arriving Friday 01/07 it would seem logical to use that date. I'm sure plenty of local cyclists would be interested in guiding/welcoming them into Edinburgh...

EdinburghGuide.com says that CM takes place on the last Friday of each month at Charlotte Square. Since when? I've detoured once or twice to "join in" but it was just the usual semi-critical mass of cars. I might come along for a look again though.

CM Edinburgh was cancelled due to lack of support. This was probably a good thing as there were some riders who were trying to have the same effect with 15 people as could be achieved with 150. This leads to unnecessary confrontation.

I'm game for the plan of welcoming the incoming G8 rides to Edinburgh though. That might be easier to drum up support for.

Can I confirm - we start at Fairmilehead, cycle to Peebles, meet the G8 riders and head back to Edinburgh? I make that about 60 miles round trip.

Alternatively is anybody organising transport to Peebles? After St Andrews the previous weekend I may need help!

Cheers

AFAIK it's about 20 mile to Peebles from Fairmilehead.

Is the pavillion carpark near the junction with Frogston Road/Oxgangs Road Question

The pavillion carpark is indeed Frogston Road / Oxgangs Road. I'll almost certainly be there. I'll see if I can get a flagpole made up in time.

I could be tempted - possibly as far out as Gladhouse/Dalkeith CP.

At last, details of what's happening! There have been rumours going around for weeks!

I'm confused as to the Edinburgh meetup location, however.
http://www.jubileescotland.org.uk/cycle.htm (which I would assume to be authoritative) says:

9.00 Tusitala Pavilion, 47 Buckstone Ter, Fairmilehead

Is this a change to the location as described in this thread?
(Multimap doesn't seem to show a Buckstone Terrace, but there are several "Buckstone.." streets nearby, but not quite in the same location)

Just to clarify: is the meeting point the crossroads of the A702 / B701 in Fairmilehead (Comiston Road / Biggar Road and Oxgangs Road / Frogston Road)?

(And if so, why couldn't they have just said so unambiguously in the first place? It seems to be an unfortunate habit in Edinburgh to give directions relative to some building, which, if you've never been to the location before, you can't find on the map!)

These are billed as the final arrangements. The 9am meet-up is the same place, just slightly more accurately described.

Tusitla Pavilion is a new-built pub/restaurant with a big car park on the east side of that bit of Comiston Road also known as Buckstone Terrace (between the junction with Braid Road and the junction with Oxgangs Road). It's fairly obvious on the rhs going up Comiston Road, roughly where the hill flattens out.

http://www.tusitala.co.uk/map.html

The only changed location from the previous arrangements is at Dalkeith, where the waypoint is now Dobbies Garden World at 3.45pm (and not the west entrance to Dalkeith Country Park).

Details as posted on the Jubilee Scotland website:

Many thanks for the update. I'll spread the word amongst my contacts!

Unfortunately, it's now looking like I have an unavoidable meeting early Friday afternoon (grr) and won't be able to take the whole day off to join the ride right from the start.

However, I hope to be able to join the incoming ride from Dalkeith (new location noted: Dobbie's Garden World is on A772 Gilmerton Road ~250 m west of A7 roundabout west of Dalkeith, for those that don't know it) or somewhere en route into town. In case I'm not able to get away early, what's the route into town after Gilmerton Road? I hope I should be able to make it in time to meet the ride somewhere on Gilmerton Road, however.

I've not found details of the route in from Dalkeith - but it's likley to be police escorted.

I'm going to try to get out to Gladhouse for 2.30, if I can swing a half day.
