The Lothian Cycle Campaign |
The Scottish Office has announced (30.12.97.) the long awaited results of its Cycle Challenge. Spokes has been awarded money for two projects.
One is for Safe Routes to School work throughout Lothian and the other is an ambitious project to offer special SPOKES maps to people in selected areas of Edinburgh and the Lothians. (Also for sale in shops and mail order.)
Scottish
Office Minister
Henry McLeish
announced (press
release)
full details of the 37 projects (out of 80 applicants) that were
successful on board a ScotRail train in Waverley Station.
(Full
list)
The amount available was originally expected to be £1/2m, but an extra £150,000 has been found to allow ScotRail to install extra cycle accommodation on its fleet of Class 158 Express trains (46 units) and Class 156 trains (30 units).
Other projects in Edinburgh to win funds were the Council's plan to put cycle parking in tenements (£15,000), a scheme to encourage cycling to work proposed by Friends of the Earth Edinburgh (£1,500) and £450 to help Roseburn Primary School launch a cycle club.
ScotRail
Managing
Director Alastair McPherson also made a major announcement that
should please cyclists throughout Scotland. From May ('98) there will
no longer be a £3 booking charge for bikes on ScotRail
trains.
It is unclear whether this will mean any relaxation on the requirement to book - at least until most trains have been modified, which is not likely to be until 1999. Mr. McPherson also asked for a meeting with SPOKES and CTC members in the New Year to discuss a wide range of issues to do with bikes and trains.
1998 looks set to be a good year for cyclists and cycle campaigners.
