Update on the Whitfield/Braeview Academy Cycle routes project (Previous progress report) - with £50,000 from Scottish Office Cycle Challenge.
Over the past months the surveys at the schools were completed and collated with some results that took us completely by surprise, resulting in the need to alter part of the route network.
Negotiations were undertaken with Abertay Housing Association who, after discussing the detailed design, agreed to donate the land required free of charge on the condition that the City Council would undertake all future maintenance of the routes constructed.
Contractors are well underway in constructing the routes despite the heavy snow experienced during January. As the scheme progressed further opportunities for improvements in the area have been taken, including the improvement of the School Crossing Patrol Points and the resiting of some lighting columns near road junctions.
Automated counting facilities are due to be installed soon allowing the City Council to collate usage figures for the various routes and new cycle parking facilities to accomodate 328 cycles are to be placed in the schools and at all the destinations highlighted by the school pupils.
The Education Department are to target all pupils and parents in the area with an education and promotion campaign timed to gather pace as the better weather arrives after the Easter holidays.

New road markings installed on Longhaugh Road just before arrival at the two Primary Schools and a Nursery School

The main cycleway / pedestrian route which stretches for the full length of the estate linking all of the primary schools with the main housing areas as well as all the major locations highlighted by the school pupils. The routes are completely traffic free except for one road crossing which has been provided for by a toucan crossing, When the project is completed the additional routes will continue this facility to the secondary schools.
