TO FIND OUT WHO IS YOUR COUNCILLOR - You don't need to know which ward you live in. Just phone the nearest Citizens Advice Bureau (see phone book), or phone the relevant council. Tell them your address, and they can then look up your ward and councillor, and tell you the phone and/or address to contact your councillor; and perhaps his/her surgery times in case you wish to see them in person. City of Edinburgh Council now has its own website where you can search for your councillor.

TO CONTACT A COUNCILLOR The most effective methods are probably a letter and/or a visit to their surgery. Be sure to have clear QUESTIONS, and ask the councillor to INVESTIGATE and to REPORT BACK to you. Please do send copies of any interesting replies to SPOKES.We often get new and useful information in this way.

THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACCESS TO INFORMATION ACT

Under this act councils in England, Wales and Scotland must:-

1. Open all council, committee and sub-committee meetings to the public (except for certain legal, confidential, personal, financial etc. matters)
2. Make copies of agenda and background reports for such meetings available at least 3 days in advance.
3. Make the minutes of such meetings available for inspection.
4. Make lists of councillors publicly available, along with lists of those powers which councillors have delegated.

To find out the times of council meetings, or to see papers, minutes, etc. phone the council number and ask for the official who deals with this (it is often a department called 'Members Services').
