A strategic cycleroute network between Edinburgh, West Lothian and Central Scotland is now in prospect. This factsheet shows what is here already, what is planned, and two vital links still unplanned. Development will be more rapid and certain if you write to say what routes you would use, and to seek priority action. We tell you who to write to. Also, ask the Government to transfer extra funds to projects like this.
The network will be used for local commuting, shopping, long-distance tourism, and day or weekend rides. A Forth Circular weekend tour with overnight stay at Stirling, Falkirk or Edinburgh will be a tremendous leisure opportunity for tourists and the millions of Central Belt residents. A Cycle Centre featuring try-out of unusual bikes, museum, accommodation etc., is being considered for Falkirk (contact: Cyclops).

Forth Bridges to Stirling: With Lottery funding all Fife routes shown will be complete by autumn 97 apart from Dunfermline town (98/99). Dunfermline to Stirling is part of Sustrans National Route #761 (complete by 2005), continuing to Callander to meet the Sustrans Dover-Glasgow-Inverness spine. Clackmannan is designing its section (97/98) but needs construction funds. Stirling's section is short but tricky and not likely soon. Stirling-Falkirk-Linlithgow-Edinburgh: This is a Sustrans National Route proposal, but is not
even specified for completion by year 2005 - a much higher priority is
needed!!! |

This West Lothian
strategic network
will greatly enhance both utility and recreational cycling.
Four main E-W routes are likely, with N-S links. Livingston
(map from W. Lothian council) already has a 300km.
network...more than Edinburgh! Biggest E-W missing link is Livingston North to Newbridge, the main potential Livingston-Edinburgh route via the A8 path and planned CERT path to the city centre. It would also connect many other paths (e.g. Newbridge-Queensferry, the canal and Livingston network) and so is vital for local cycle opportunities. A wide strip of land is available by the A89, to be landscaped by LEEL, who will consider a path if there is enough support. W. Lothian Council is very keen, but there are two problems: Edinburgh controls part of the area, and Sustrans considers it too near a major road to designate as a national route. Your letters (especially to LEEL) can help! |
