SPOKES - Some Frequently Asked Questions

We hope that you can find everything that you need to know about SPOKES on this Web site. Please note that SPOKES is an entirely voluntary organisation, with no staff. Unfortunately we don't have the time to reply individually to the many enquiries we receive, particularly from members of the public who are not members of SPOKES.

However, below we give answers to some of the more frequent questions. Please also look at the Links Page to find other sites that might have more relevant information.

  • PLEASE SEND ME ADVICE ON MY PLANNED CYCLING HOLIDAY
The following route guides and maps are available from SPOKES by post. See the
address at the bottom of the page.

There are several other sites that will have information on routes and maps in Scotland. Try;-

Try also our 'Using Your Local Council' page for addresses of Councils that might be able to provide cycleroute maps or leaflets.

If you are arriving by bike (and not just bike on car rack!!) then check out our Discounts Page for discounts available to all cyclists and not just members.

  • HOW CAN I FIND THE NAME/ADDRESS/PHONE OF MY COUNCILLOR/MP?
    Check out our pages
Factsheet No. 1: Councillors, MSPs and MPs in Edinburgh and Lothian and Factsheet No. 2: Using Your Local Council on this web site.

  • IS SPOKES A CHARITY? CAN I MAKE DONATIONS THROUGH A C.A.F. CHEQUE OR CARD?
Some years ago a lawyer member of SPOKES tried to register us as a charity, but this was not allowed. Donations cannot therefore be made via C.A.F. (Note: For anyone not familiar, the Charities Aid Foundation allows taxpayers to make tax-efficient donations to any charity. You contribute to a fund by deductions from your wages, CAF reclaims the tax and you can contribute to any charity at any time by using a CAF charities 'chequebook' or CAF plastic card. For further details, telephone CAF on 0800-99 33 11 or visit the CAF web site at
    www.charitycard.org

  • CAN YOU HELP WITH MY STUDENT/COLLEGE/SCHOOL PROJECT ON SPOKES/CYCLING/TRANSPORT/PRESSURE GROUPS/ETC? If you send a stamped addressed envelope to SPOKES (address below) then we will be able to send you copies of SPOKES leaflets not available on this web site, a membership form and a pricelist.
If you wish to speak to or interview a SPOKES member, by phone or in person, the following have offered to help. Please contact them direct. Please choose who to phone by using a dice or similar, to avoid the first person on the list getting all the calls!
