Home Zones for Scotland Conference Stirling 29th November 1999
Children's Play Council launches "Home Zones"

An important new campaign to "reclaim residential streets" has been launched by the Children's Play Council.

The phrase Home Zones has now been added to the list of things that people will want to see in their neigbourhoods. It is likely that groups campaigning for Safe Routes to School and 20mph limits will seize upon this new initiative and increase the pressure on local and national government.

This is the sign for a home zone. It is internationally recognised. But cannot be used in the UK because local authorities do not have the power to put them up.
CPC has joined with Transport 2000 and the Child Accident Prevention Trust and produced a well researched and well argued 12 page pamphlet showing what is common practice elsewhere in Europe. ("Woonerfs" have long been a civilising feature of Dutch life). It argues convincingly for changes in UK law.

"It is easy to think that busy, dangerous, car-filled streets are an inevitable side-effect of modern life. But it need not be this way. With a little imagination, a small shift in resources and a straightforward change in the law, many residential streets could be transformed from car corridors to valued outdoor spaces: spaces where cars travel slowly and safely, where people can walk, cycle or simply sit and chat, and where it is safe for children to play and get around on their own. This new style of street - the home zone - could reclaim residential streets for the people who live in them."
