Lothian Safe Routes is an offshoots of SPOKES the highly successful Lothian Cycle Campaign.

In 1996 SPOKES issued a challenge to all Lothian schools.

In the financial year 98/99 LSR received funding as a result of the Scottish Office Cycle Challenge to do more Safe Routes to School work in Lothian. This reulted in newsletters, a survey of Lothian schools by Jo Cleary, a conference which attracted nearly 120 delegates (including Sarah Boyack - before she became Minster for Transport and the Environment in the Scottish Parliament.

LSR is continuing to work with schools in the Lothian area to encourage walking and cycling.

A new website - the safe routes network was also started as part of the Scottish Office Cycle Challenge project.
