Sustrans and the National Cycle Network have become somewhat synonymous although in fact it is only one of many projects that Sustrans is involved in. The Network, promoted by Sustrans, developed by a range of partners and supported by the Millennium Commission, is due to be officially opened on 21st June 2000. By then there will be 5000 miles complete, with a further 5000 miles to be completed by 2005. It is an amazing resource so lets all get out and use it!
With the 21st June approaching fast, there is a tremendous flurry of activity at the moment - for example, at Drumochter Pass, Aberfoyle, Glenogle etc - which will mean that most routes will be finished on time. There are, inevitably, a few problem spots which will not be finished by June 21st.
Sustrans plans to set up the National Cycle Network Agency, to be responsible for extending, maintaining and promoting the Network.
The National Cycle Network is only one of many projects that Sustrans is presently involved in. However, in Scotland, in the past, we have been less involved in other initiatives but that is set to change. Sustrans plan to develop work on all the following initiatives:
| VOLUNTEER RANGER SCHEME

The official opening of the NCN on 21st
June - the longest day - will be celebrated with the Longest Ride when
all 10,000 miles of the Network will be ridden in 260 different rides.
Scotland has 52 rides of varying lengths with18 start points. The rides
from Edinburgh are particularly important as they will leave from the main
reception event in Scotland, attended by the First Minister and Transport
and Environment Minister. We still need volunteers to ride from Edinburgh
and all over Scotland!
