 ROSEBURN SCHOOL CYCLING CLUB

They were dancing in the streets of Roseburn just after Christmas when it was announced that the Scottish Office had awarded £450 to help start a cycling club at the local Roseburn Primary School.

Parent Malcolm Bruce submitted a bid last June to the Scottish Office's Cycle Challenge after receiving promises of matching funds from the City of Edinburgh Council, SPOKES and the school's parent-teacher association.

Malcolm will spend some of the money on workshop tools and spares and also on restoring an old tandem. The club will teach cycle maintenance and take children on rides - initially around Edinburgh.

Although the school is on a busy road it is close to a number of off road routes. Nearby Roseburn Park is an ideal place for children to learn to cycle safely and will soon be an official cycle route as part of the Water of Leith Walkway.

In the opposite direction is the start of the North Edinburgh Cycle Network - six miles of continuous off road tarmac with links to other cycle paths.
