SCHOOL SURVEY FORM

LATEST SAFE ROUTES NEWS
Many schools contacted SPOKES during its Cycle Challenge to say that they were interested in the idea of boosting cycling and walking, but needed more advice on how to start. Many intended to survey the children to see how they travel to school.

To continue this work with all schools in Lothian, SPOKES is setting up a partnership of organisations, provisionally called LOTHIAN SAFE ROUTES.

We intend to involve bodies such as the four Lothian councils, Sustrans, Lothian Health and Lothian and Borders Police in this work. We asked for support from the Scottish Office Cycle Challenge (we were successful!) and other sources to set up this organisation and will apply for charitable status. SAFE ROUTES will seek to do five things:

1. Publicise the achievement of the schools that took part in this year's challenge, by producing a guide which highlights good practice and includes technical information and sources of teaching material. This information will also be available on the Worldwide Web.

2. Help to set up safe routes working groups within schools and developing a Lothian-wide network of people interested in safe routes work.

3. Arrange trips and exchanges with schools in Britain and Europe which have experience of encouraging walking and cycling to school. The town of York and the municipality of Odense in Denmark will be the first ports of call.

4. Organise a national conference on Safe Routes to School in 1999 to draw together experience from Scotland and elsewhere.

5. Provide information and advice and publish a regular newsletter.
