The idea for Safe Routes to Schools has
been around for some years and the National cycle paths charity SUSTRANS
has done a lot of work - mostly in England - to promote the idea of safer
walking and cycling routes. Check Sustrans' Safe
Routes pages for advice on why and how to start a local group.
Currently there are important projects in York
and Colchester identifying routes around pilot schools and making them
safer. Sustrans has calculated that it can cost around £100,000 per
school for traffic calming measures.
About ten years ago Sustrans produced a report
for Lothian Regional Council on all the secondary schools in Lothian. Unfortunately
very little was done until recently.
In 1996 SPOKES issued a challenge
to all Lothian schools.
