Safe Routes to School Project - Whitfield Dundee - Background Info. (Update 2.99)

For further information contact; Mr. Stephen Page, Cycling Officer DO NOT contact the schools

Dundee City Council received one of the largest awards under the Scottish Office Cycle Challenge Fund - The £50,000 award, the third largest in the country will be used to complete a network of cycle routes in the Whitfield area of the city - centred on the Braeview Academy secondary school and routes passing by four feeder primary schools. Dundee City Council has pledged to match this funding to create a total project cost of £100,000 over the next year.

The Whitfield area was chosen for this pilot project for a number of reasons -

including:

1) The area has in the past been subject to successful community regeneration work aimed at improving the physical environment of the estate which included the construction of some segregated cycle tracks and footways to offer more direct routes than on the road network

2) Indications are that there is a suppressed demand for cycling in the area due to the fragmented nature of the existing facilities

3) The area is circled by three potentially "fast" roads, one of which, Longhaugh Road was subject to traffic calming measures in 1995/96 outside the two primary schools - this alone has led to a reduction in accidents by a factor of around 50%, in other areas, where traffic calming is not practical the project will seek to provide safe and convenient alternatives for cyclists

4) The area benefits from its' location by having substantial amounts of open space upon which new facilities can be built, including the possibility to link to wildlife areas and parkland to the south where the Dundee "Green Circular" route has already been constructed.(The Green Circular - at 26 miles the longest continuous cycleway in the city). The project primary aim is to increase the quantity of cycling undertaken in the area, however the success of the scheme will also be measured through other indicators:

The Scottish Office Grant is payable for 1998 only and therefore the various partners in the project are embarking on a fast learning process to ensure the scheme's effectiveness. Partners in the project include:

Dundee City Council - Transportation Division (lead partner)

Dundee City Council - Education Department

Tayside Police - Road Safety Unit / Architectural Liaision Officer / Local Officers

Whitfield Steering Group (Community Council)

Currently the city council does not have any publications relating to cycling facilities but enquiries should be directed towards Stephen Page Transportation Division, Planning & Transportation Department , Dundee City Council, Tayside House, DUNDEE DD! 3RB Tel. +44 (0) 1382 433408 Fax. 433313
