April 28 'PEDAL ON PARLIAMENT' DEMONSTRATION Bike ride inspired by Times campaign in London April 28, and various people in Scotland (mainly linked with Cycling Embassy of GB) hoping to organise similar for Scotland in Edinburgh on same day. Manifesto drawn up and consulted on, is impressive. Target is to influence government for a step change in attitude/policies on cycling. Website now online www.pedalonparliament.org. People to arrive Meadows 2-3pm, ride to Parliament beginning at 3pm. Short speeches at Parliament then picnic in Holyrood park if fine. Judy has farmers' market stall a.m. Hope to pack up at 1.30 and come to Meadows right after by 2pm, with table c/o Goff and Mies. **Dave to check stall ok. Was felt would be useful to have a stall at picnic spot after the ride too, if possible. Judy and Mies will have finished their stint. **Mark to try and get Bike Stn load-carrying cycle - use this as extension to Meadows stall, and as a stall itself at the picnic site. B. May 15 TRAFFIC COUNT Barbara Darcy to coordinate next 2 counts, with advice from Judy and Mies. Dave has sent helper lists. **Judy to check with Barbara that all ok and if further advice needed. C. May 26 SUMMER MAILOUT D. June 20 BIKE BREAKFAST Mies/Martyn inviting stalls - most are now sorted. Free police security marking confirmed. ** Mies - Speakers to be invited [only 3-4 mins each] a. New transport convener post-election. Mies to contact officials to get it in the diary ready for new convener. b. Keith Brown, Transport Minister. Mies contacting K for advice on this. Would be useful incentive for new CEC transport convener to take cycling seriously if Transport Minister turns up! Need to invite him soon. ** Mies - to contact Tim re poster to go in May 26 mailout E. STALLS ** Many stalls in next couple of months - Volunteers please contact Judy. Stalls at A & D above. Also.. Ingliston police/CEC streets ahead display - spokes can be there too - police provide lunch and free entry tickets for our volunteers. Judy will investigate when we can staff something. F. HOW TO BE A CYCLING CHILD Katherine has done draft factsheet for parents - Mies has done major comments. G. SPOKES 2012 SUMMER COMPETITION Favourite place to be at/ or go to/ or pass through by bike (in Edinburgh or Lothians). NOT a whole ride (we've done that) but a *location*. Dave has prepared draft entry/info form - now on website www.spokes.org.uk - documents - odds&ends - competitions - 2012 Prizes to be sought as follows [telling donors that they will not be allocated till September]... Mies - Seabird, Jupiter, Kalpna, Peters Yard, Bike Coop Dave - ScotRail Katherine - Camera Obscura [confirmed] Judy - Sustrans maps [confirmed] Claire - Bike Stn, Cinema tickets Will also need to think of... a. an outside judge for September b. closing date - 21 September?? [are there any events/stalls which we should consider in choosing the date?] H. MOTORIST/CYCLIST AWARENESS First part of council/police campaign week of April 2, generally successful. Event planned by council for June 20 lunchtime, following on from bike breakfast. Hoping for HGV demo of blind spots, possibly in Festival Square. Mies has spoken to CEC Steven Murrell about possible material to driving schools, car club, motoring offender rehab courses, etc to use the Audrey Fyfe money. Police (Quentin) say they contact all cabs annually (re licensing) so this could be a contact point for the material too. Mies has advertised for volunteer Ed Uni student to work on this. I. SHARED PATHS LEAFLET Tim Smith had contacted Judy suggesting new version of ped/cyclist shared paths leaflet. He has offered to do artwork. See original version and other similar and subsequent leaflets here... http://www.spokes.org.uk/wordpress/documents/advice/considerate-cycling Would be good to have a new version, even if initially only on website rather than printed form. Discussed briefly - generally the existing spokes one is too long, the bike stn one perhaps too short. Tim's version for WL map might be a good basis to work from. Think again at next meeting. J. SPOKES TALL BANNER Discussed purchase one of the very tall banners with heavy base (water-filled for ease of transport). Mies to investigate cost and whether Tim could do artwork. Artwork suggestion to be just the 6 characters of the Spokes logo (vertical instead of horizontal), and with website address in smaller type printed on its side beside the vertical logo. Banner could only be used for events where we use car transport (about 50% of cases, so would still be quite useful).
