Spokes is a voluntary organisation, founded in 1977, now with over 1000 members. Our two objectives are... to promote cycling, as part of a sustainable transport and access strategy, and to ensure that councils and government actively do the same. to publicise the benefits of cycling for the community and individuals – like walking, it is cheap, efficient, enjoyable, healthy, non-polluting and intrinsically safe. Activities include political lobbying, research, public meetings, traffic counts, stalls and bike rides. Our Bulletin has a 13,000 print-run, distributed to members, over 1500 named decision-makers across Scotland, and available free through bike shops, libraries etc. Our cycle maps of Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Lothians have sold over 100,000 copies since 1987. Research projects include an annual survey of all Scottish cycling investment, traffic counts, and action-research on topics such as cycle parking for tenement dwellers and how to undertake everyday bike journeys with young children. The website www.spokes.org.uk is a huge repository of documents, links and news stories covering our political, practical and social activities.
