  • Spokesworker is an occasional ("roughly monthly") news sheet, with stop-press news of forthcoming events, and of road, traffic and planning matters. It is not automatically sent to all members. A copy is enclosed if we are writing to you anyway, and copies are handed out at meetings of working groups. It is also published here on the website. Also, you can make sure of getting a copy by sending Spokes 10 or so stamped addressed envelopes.

    Government Transport Policy, Scotland

Malcolm Chisholm, the new Minister responsible for Transport at the Scottish Office, gave his first speech on transport at the SPOKES/GO BIKE (Strathclyde Campaign) cycling conference in Glasgow City Chambers on 21 May. The speech is reproduced here. We have highlighed sections of the speech which seem particularly encouraging. PLEASE WRITE TO YOUR MP ABOUT NATIONAL CYCLE AND TRANSPORT ISSUES, quoting from the speech if useful to do so. See SPOKES Newsletter 65 p1 for details of how to write, and suggestions for topics. Although the minister's speech is hopeful it is vital to keep up the pressure, as he will come under heavy pressure from all directions!
