Road threat to North Edinburgh Cycle Network!!!.
Plans have been resurrected for a NEW ROAD TO GRANTON ALONG THE 'PILTON PATH', from Ferry Road to West Granton Road. Although there will be an adjacent cyclepath, the road is completely counter to the city's supposed philosophy of sustainable development - it will suck car commuters in to take up jobs in the area being developed, rather than providing local jobs. In future it could also re-open calls for a northern city bypass, Roseburn-Granton-Leith. One present option is to cut through the main north Edinburgh railway path at Ferry Road, replacing the bridge with traffic lights! There is no way SPOKES will let this go ahead (as always we rely on YOU to help by writing) and we are hoping it is mainly an idea from the local area team, which has not been fully discussed at the top levels of the department. We have written an initial very strong letter, to get more information.
WE URGE ALL USERS OF THE PATH, EVEN AT THIS INITIAL STAGE, TO WRITE TO THEIR COUNCILLOR, AND ASK THEM TO RAISE THIS WITH THE CITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT. EXPRESS YOUR OUTRIGHT OPPOSITION TO ANY CUTTING OF THE NORTH EDINBURGH NETWORK, AND GRAVE CONCERNS ABOUT ROAD-BASED ECONOMOC DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN THE CITY.
If you don't know the name of your councillor, phone the Citizen's Advice Bureau on 0131-557-1500 or the council on 0131-529-3186. Please copy your letter (and any useful reply) to SPOKES. You could also copy your letter to Councillor David Begg, the chairperson of Edinburgh council's transport committee.
