Spokes Bike Breakfast – June 20

The excellent annual Spokes Bike Breakfast will be between 8-10am on Weds 20 June in the City Chamber quadrangle on Edinburgh’s High Street…

Please download the Bike Breakfast poster [pdf 261k] and print out any copies you can put up at work, local shops, or elsewhere.  Also see the event on the National Bike Week events database [where you can also find other bike week events].

As well as breakfast on your way to work, there will be a big range of stalls, police bike security coding, bike chain cleaning by Edinburgh Bicycle, and much more.

Following the council elections new Transport Convener Cllr Lesley Hinds will speak briefly [probably around 8.45].  She will be introduced by the new Council Leader, and transport convener 2001-6, Cllr Andrew Burns.  There are also likely to be many other councillors dropping by for chats on their way in to work at the City Chambers.  Take the opportunity to do some lobbying – councillors need and want to hear from ordinary constituents, not just spokes activists.  Just ask around and you’ll soon find some councillors to chat to!

There may be some MSPs too – speak to them about the need to restructure the government transport budget, so that cycling gets significantly more than the present less than 1p in every £1 of transport spending [that’s crazy when the government itself has set a very ambitious target for 10% of all trips in Scotland to be by bike by 2020].

This year people from 2 or 3 local areas are organising rides to the breakfast, and will be inviting their councillors/MSPs to join in.  These rides are being organised by interested local people, not Spokes as such.  To see if there is a ride from your area, or to suggest one, or for other info, see www.breakfastbikeride.org.uk or contact Mike Smith:  lionfishy at gmail dot com. 07779527004.   Spare bikes may be available for new cyclists!

The summer Spokes mailout goes out on May 26 and all members should receive Spokes Bulletin 113 and poster copies soon after that.  The Bulletin features…

  • Opportunities resulting from the council elections [Edinburgh, Lothians and Scotland] – and what you can do to help …
  • Pedal on Parliament – reports and pictures
  • The current situation on government cycling investment
  • A Sustrans Scotland pullout supplement
  • A helmet special
  • Some fascinating oddities
  • and, as always, much more!!

MORE EVENTS

After the Bike Breakfast there will be another June 20 event, from 11-2 at Festival Square, put on by the council and police, highlighting HGV/cyclist mutual awareness.    As well as Spokes and other stalls, you’ll have the chance to sit in an HGV or bus driver’s seat, so as to see [or not see!] the blind spots experienced by the driver.

The Spokes Bike Breakfast is part of National Bike Week.   For more events, see the NBW national website.
