… like Amsterdam

Why can’t we do it like Amsterdam” is the opening line of an inspirational new song and video by Edinburgh musician and cycling activist Dan Abrahams, supported by Spokes. The catchy song, which risks becoming your next earworm, continues.. “when I ride, I’m free ..”

Dan’s video includes images of various Edinburgh streets transformed into cycling and walking havens by celebrated German animator Jan Kamensky. You can watch the video here.

The video shows transformations of Haymarket, Castle Street and Dalry Road in which cars float away and are replaced by trees, benches and people walking and cycling.

Spokes gave financial support for the video, as part of our campaign to show how Edinburgh could benefit from streets that welcome cyclists and pedestrians, as well as just demonstrating the enjoyment of getting about by bike for your everyday journeys.

For Edinburgh city centre, Spokes is part of the growing call for a Council rethink on plans for Princes Street.   Princes Street and George Street, world-renowned streets, should both provide the wider footways and safe and attractive cycling conditions which are the hallmarks of any 21st-century European capital.

Commenting on the video, Spokes press officer Ian Maxwell said.. “Dan’s song conveys the powerful message that Edinburgh should take even bolder steps to transform our streets into a cycling and walking paradise like Amsterdam

What you can do..
