Spokes National Cycling Proposal

Spokes has proposed a major cycling project to the government’s NPF3 consultation, which seeks ideas for ‘developments of national significance’ …

Our proposal [pdf 114k] is for one truly cycle-friendly town or city in every Scottish local authority, all to be linked by existing or new sections of the Sustrans National Network.  Download our document for further details.

The government is consulting on National Planning Framework 3, as part of which it has issued a call for ideas for nationally-significant projects.

In order to be considered, any proposal must be of national significance (not just regional) and it must also contribute significantly to one or more of the following criteria…

  • An 80% reduction in emissions by 2050.
  • Achieving the aims of the Zero Waste Plan.
  • The Scottish Government’s Renewable Energy Targets.
  • Skills development, reducing unemployment and job creation.
  • Strengthening Scotland’s links with the rest of the world.
  • Improving our digital, transport, utilities or green infrastructure networks.
  • Adapting to or mitigating the effects of climate change.
  • Improving the quality of the built or natural environment.

The Spokes proposal contributes not merely to ‘one or more’ criteria, but to every one of the criteria – as explained in our submission.

WHAT YOU CAN DO!!

  • If you support our proposal, please write to your MSPs  [find them at www.writetothem.com].  Draw their attention to our proposal, ask them if they will support it with relevant Ministers, and to let you know the outcome.  Even though the project fits all the criteria it will only work if it gets adequate government leadership, support and funding.  Send us any useful replies from your MSPs [but don’t bother if it is just an acknowledgement!]
  • Or – if you have your own ideas for a related or similar project  make your own submission to the consultation.   Use the official submission form at the government NPF3 websiteClosing date 14 December.
